The 3D Vision youth group strives to embody devotion to the great commandment to love God and our neighbors, duty to the great commission to be discipled and make disciples of Jesus, and drive to live for the glory of God. Our goal is that the students will grow in love and faith for God, will know the contents of the Bible well and hide God’s word in their heart, be equipped to cling well to Christ, and have a robust grasp of the doctrine of Christianity.
The youth group is a means by which North Oaks endeavors to disciple its teenagers in 7th-12th grade in partnership with their parents. Guests are always welcome at our events. This discipleship is done through several regular activities in addition to the normal life of the church.
The youth group meets on Sunday mornings year-long from 9:00-10:00. This class is designed to teach the teenagers the basic doctrines of the Christian faith in a way that is accessible and relevant to them. Typically we go through a catechism (a teaching device using question and answers) like the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
The youth also participate in our Sunday worship service as worshippers with the rest of the church. We believe that is important that our students are members of the church community not just in name, but in practice. This service is at 10:30 every Sunday.
As part of our church-wide Wednesday evening service, 7:00-8:30 during the school year, our students lead the music in our opening time of worship. Together as a whole church we worship together in space that allows the students to grow in the practice of their faith.
After the time of worship is done, usually about 7:15, the students spend time growing in community with one another by playing games and studying the Bible. A typical Wednesday night includes a study as part of series on a particular book of the Bible, with teen-led discussion groups to reflect on the lesson.
We want our students to be friends with each other and to have a solid community of peers. Part of the way we do this is having evenings of fun. During October-May, the first Friday night of the month we have a fun social evening. During June-August we meet on Wednesday evenings at Clintonwood Park for a time of prayer and games.
We also go on an annual retreat every January/February to Camp Barakel.
There are several ongoing areas of service that the youth group participates in. During the school year, we send a team once a month to help a ministry in Pontiac with a children’s Bible study. The youth group supports a child through Compassion International, and has a series of service activities throughout the year, such as a day in November where we rake the lawns of people in our community who are not in a position to do so themselves.
Annually, we go on a mission trip during the summer.
We also try to have several annual seminars for parents to help equip them for discipling their students at home.
